Puzzle #1 ·

The Fall of the Berlin Wall

1989

The answer

On 9 November 1989, East German spokesman Günter Schabowski mistakenly suggested new travel rules took effect 'immediately'. That night, overwhelming crowds forced the Berlin Wall's crossings open. Within a year, Germany was reunified.

The opening followed weeks of demonstrations against the East German government. Protesters were challenging restrictions on travel and demanding political change. At a press conference in Berlin, Schabowski read out a new travel regulation, but his explanation left viewers with the impression that the border could be crossed at once. Television carried the announcement to people who had spent years living with severe limits on movement.

Crowds arrived at the checkpoints while border guards were still trying to establish what orders applied. The guards had not been prepared for an immediate opening. Some learned about the announcement from broadcasts rather than through their chain of command. As more people gathered, pressure on the crossings increased, and the barriers eventually opened.

The dramatic scenes were therefore the result of both a public announcement and decisions made on the ground. People crossed into West Berlin and celebrated with those waiting on the other side. The opening of the checkpoints marked the collapse of a border system that had divided the city for almost three decades; it did not mean that every physical section of the wall disappeared that night.
